AARP is a non-profit, non-partisan, privately owned interest group that’s based in the U.S. It currently has a membership of 38 million members and was founded 1958 by Ethel Percy Andrus and Leonard Davis. AARP is one of the most influential lobbying groups in the U.S. and it focuses on issues surrounding the security, protection, and empowerment of the aging population.
AARP offers health insurance to persons aged 50-64 who would otherwise have difficulty securing individual plans with other providers. And even if they do manage purchase health insurance on average their deductibles are 2.5 times more expensive than those who are covered under employer health plans.
A wide range of health insurance plans is available to its members including, HMO plans, Indemnity Plans, dental insurance, and vision insurance. For members over the age of 64, they offer special Medicare benefits like prescription drug coverage with no restrictions based on pre-existing conditions, protection against drug price increases and changes drug requirement, plans that pay for overheads not financed by Medicare.
